OpenAI Begins Testing Advertisements in ChatGPT to Support Free Access

OpenAI has officially started rolling out advertisements inside ChatGPT for select users, marking a major shift in how the world’s most popular AI chatbot is monetized. This new ad experience is being tested with logged-in adult users in the United States who are on the Free and ChatGPT Go subscription plans.

Ads Appear Only for Free and Go Users

Under the new initiative, users on ChatGPT’s free tier and the affordable Go plan (a low-cost subscription tier) will begin to see ads placed below chatbot responses. OpenAI has confirmed that paid tiers, such as ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Business, Enterprise, and Education, will remain ad-free for the time being.

According to OpenAI, this advertising experiment is designed to help fund infrastructure costs and maintain broad access to powerful AI tools without compromising quality. By introducing ads to lower-tier users, the company aims to keep free and low-cost access viable while continuing to invest in further advances.

Ads Won’t Influence ChatGPT’s Responses

One of the key reassurances from OpenAI is that ads will not affect the content or quality of ChatGPT’s answers. Ads are clearly labeled as “sponsored” and visually separated from the AI’s responses, ensuring that users can distinguish between organic answers and advertising content. Additionally, advertisers will have no access to personal conversations or chat histories.

The company has also emphasized strong privacy protections and user control, allowing users to turn off ad personalization and manage their ad preferences at any time. Ads will not appear in chats involving sensitive or regulated topics such as health, mental health, or politics, and users under the age of 18 will be excluded from seeing ads.

Why OpenAI Is Introducing Ads

Running large-scale AI models like ChatGPT requires substantial computing resources and ongoing investment. While OpenAI already generates revenue through subscription plans and enterprise services, advertising provides an additional way to support the platform’s infrastructure and keep free access available to millions of users worldwide.

This testing phase allows OpenAI to gather user feedback and optimize the ad experience before planning any broader rollout in more regions or additional user segments.
